Elyssa was in the science laboratory when the emergency alerts started ringing and the call to evacuate rang out across the colony. She would have liked to be out on the field for this but had some time-sensitive mission-critical observations to make in the lab. An ensign ran into her with a scared look on her face, she hadnt been here long but Elyssa liked her and she seemed very dedicated. Today she was assigned to filtering an assigning incoming data traffic to various science teams.
“Sir, um, we are receiving data from Lieutenant Commander Tigerlilly in the field, I'm not sure what to do. It's come through on comms, do I have to action it because everyone is packing up.?”
The Lieutenant looked up some of the feed that the computer was highlighting for her. Mineral exos, metallic endos, it was so fascinating and tied in the the mineralogy studies she was already conducting here. The ensign stood waiting for long seconds close to crying as Lieutenant Kala'myr took in the data and then responded.
“Sorry, yes, lock down your terminal and go with the other ensigns to the evacuation point, let the senior staff worry about this data.”
She dismissed the ensign and began the process of transferring data into secure storage and rendering any experiments that may have harmful effects inert. She didn't have the warmness of some of her colleagues so might have done better comforting the young girl, but she was who was. As she went about her business of checking and closing everything down, she couldn't help but keep looking at the data that she was receiving.
“Computer, cross reference the scans of the creature's skin with the studies from location Kappa-4. Please note any similar molecular instabilities”
“Negative, lockdown procedure in place. Processing optimised for data security and integrity.”
“Humour me"
“Bleep buzz”
“Computer, please override the procedure and run the analysis with emergency processing capacity. Authorisation….” She said her code and waited as the scans continued.
More and more people were filing out of the offices and toward the waiting evacuation craft. Elyssa would join them shortly but she needed to make sure the labs were safe and as much data as possible was her duty. She also needed to satisfy her curiosity, there might be something in it, there might not. She wished she had more time to fully examine the data regards the creature and instructed the computer to transfer as much of Tigerlilly's data to her personal pad for her to read once they were out of the immediate danger area.
The computer beeped as the analysis finished and she looked up. There were enough matches to put these minerals into the same structural category, but she would need to examine a hard sample of the beast before she could be certain. This might be what they needed though, in studying the Kappa site they had looked into mining techniques to efficiently gather samples of the nearly indestructible mineral. If she could get that data to tactical, they might be able to adjust their weaponry to get through its armour and subdue the kaiju safely.
She transferred the findings and began hastily preparing a report to send to Lt Mackenzie, the Onlie tactical head might enjoy reading this. It might be nothing but it might help them save the colony.
Elyssa went on the comm to the whole of the science department.
“This is Lieutenant Kala’myr. The department will be secure in approximately 60 seconds. If you have not already, please gather the last of your things and head to your designated evacuation points. Team leaders, please have your headcounts with me before you board.”
Elyssa was young but hid her anxiety well at this moment and she knew that procedures were in place for this reason.
