As it is with a dream, with a vision in the night

431 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Terrorpin
Location: Nikedoros' Quarters

As they descended the image on the viewscreen was idyllic - blue ocean surrounding large islands of lush green land with rolling hills and with thriving cities along the coast. The largest sat at the mouth of a large natural harbor filled with the fishing fleets that support the colony's primary export. But past the warehouses and processing plants, it rises in tall rectangular towers supporting apartments and business complexes.

But the peaceful impression rapidly faded as ships could seen forming a perimeter blocking the seaward approach to the city and a shimmering arc marked linked forcefields projected in front of the hovering ships and down into the sea.

Then it was shattered altogether as a section of shield rippled with impact! A giant wave seemed to rush backward from it and a claw the size of large building shot from the sea ripped out of the ocean and gashed at the shield. Two fighters screamed toward it, firing!  Hits lit up the dripping hide - to no effect.  The claw whipped round catching the trailing fighter's tail and sending spinning end over end and explode in massive fireball! Then the crest of an enormous, misshapen reptilian head rose, issuing a bone-chilling screech before disappearing again beneath the waves.

She gasped at the sight; reciting under her breath, half in wonder, half in horror, "And I saw a beast rising out of the sea..."

Sofia shot awake, blankets thrown aside, eyes wide.

Then she took a measured breath, looking around her room. It had been a dream, one more snatch of memory than dreamscape, but a dream. Still, the images lingered, vivid, as few dreams remained on waking. It felt too much like premonition. Chilled, she drew her knees up, wrapping her arms around them. Despite distant relation to an entity once worshipped as a god of prophecy, she wasn't given to clairvoyance, but there had been times, flashes of precognition... She shook her head. No, those were most often just an impulse, a fay sense she needed to be somewhere or do some particular thing. Actual warning via dream had happened only once...

*Rumble* The ground shook! shelves rattled and PaDDs tumbled from the nightstand. Sofia grabbed the sides of the mattress, bracing. Dear Lord, please, don't let that dream be prophecy. When the ground stilled, she leapt from the bed and threw on clothes and ran for the chapel. Whether earthquake or something worse, there'd be injuries,
questions, frightening people looking for help and assurance.

It took no second sight to know she'd be needed.
