"Mahone, wake up!"
The forever blackness that Luka assumed was to be his existence post (what he assumed was) his demise came to a rude halt as his face collided with a hard, solid object. Pushing himself upward to a sitting position, he rubbed his forehead, taking a look at the surroundings. The familiar sight of greyish-white walls and the ever-present hum of a warp core told him he was on a ship, but the bed next to him and the blankets he had taken with him on his fall were unfamiliar. He would never be caught dead with a blanket that had circus animals all over it.
"Jesus, you're gonna be late for your shift, dummy."
Peering over the side of the bed, Luka caught sight of the perpetrator. The wily, dusty hair and the the annoyed look of Asahi Kita stared back at him. Nearby on the bed was the black and white collie that Asahi kept as his present companion; Hojo, who looked about as annoyed as Asahi did that his sleep was disturbed.
"My shift?" came that question out of Luka's mouth. Asahi's nose scrunched in confusion, so Luka continued. "I-I had one of those waking dreams."
Asahi was unimpressed at the clearly poor attempt at a reason. "Tch, what'd you do, die?"
Funny you mention that. The reflex to roll his eyes came before Luka could stop himself, and he stood upright. "I'd be less clueless if I didn't have to deal with your sass all the time."
"You're the one who suggested we get married." Asahi let out a snort of a laugh, shaking his head. Then he flopped over in bed, making a clearly over-dramatic noise of defeat. "You chase after me for physicals, I finally cave and you complain. You get me to make all these modifications to your medical labs, and you complain. You ask me to marry you, I agree... you complain. What is going to please you, Doctor Mahone? I only have so much of me to give."
Luka's clueless blinking was accompanied only by a open and close of his mouth. The more Asahi said, the less Luka understood. A moment ago, he was sure he was dead or in some form of weird stasis. And now? He was staring down his best friend - husband? - who was insistent that he had somewhere to be. From what it sounded like-
"Commander Mahone." The voice blared from a commbadge sitting atop a nightstand. "We are headed into a battle situation, Captain Rezvani has requested you scramble to station in the Med Bay immediately."
Clueless blinking turned into narrowed eyes and a frown. There was too much unfamiliarity with the situation, but he recognized the voice. And the name. "I guess I better go."
"Guess you better," Asahi quipped back, peering at the man on the floor. "Shoo shoo, before-"
"Commander Mahone, make sure the Lieutenant Commander also scrambles to Engineering." came the same voice.
"Drat."
Luka rolled his eyes, standing himself up and tossing the blankets on top of the other. "Get up then, Lieutenant Commander." He turned to get to wherever the uniforms were in this room. If he was going to play the role, he may as well dress the part. Maybe some of this would start making sense.
As soon as he laid eyes upon the soft blue of the Medical uniform, a flash blinded his view. Then, darkness.
