Mission: What Lies Ahead, Between, and Behind
Location: Haumea Command - Control Room
Timeline: MD2 0700 hours

Ensigns Chai and Shon appeared in the control room where they were prepared to receive their duty assignments together. The room was similar to that of their academy classrooms, a front lectern for the speaker and two dozen seats arranged on small tiers.

“I do not understand the utility of walking to the control room to receive our duty assignments. It is illogical. Our assignments could simply be forwarded to our PaDDs,” Shon logically concluded.

“This is how it’s done here, Shon. We meet more than the three people we cohabitate with,” Ilendi reminded the Vulcan.

“Small talk and friendships are irrelevant to our duty shifts.”

Chai shook her head. “Where is Nick or Sara this morning?” she asked rhetorically.

“Nicholas is off duty today,” Shon explained. “Sara has taken leave, she must return to Earth.”

"Hey, hello," a lavender haired ensign called as she entered the room. "First time for me here - how does this work?" Delia asked.

Chai smiled and extended her hand. “This is where we receive our orders, sometimes for the day and sometimes for the week,” she answered. “I’m Chai Ilendi - yes, I know my first name is a Terran tea, it’s a long story - this model of logic is Shon. We usually have more people. Must be the ‘ bubble’.” Chai babbled.

“Greetings and long life,” Shon intoned as he displayed the Vulcan salute.

"Delia Cil, pilot," Delia replied, shaking the Orion's hand. "Pleased to meet you. And you, Shon," she said with a nod since she knew Vulcans generally preferred not to touch people. She looked around the room. "Kinda weird having us show up in person, isn't it? I mean, they could send assignments to our PaDDs, right?"

“That was my observation as well,” Shon responded dryly. “A supposition, perhaps we are receiving coinciding assignments during which Starfleet believes we would best work as a team. Thusly, introductions could make the work more agreeable.”

As part of her orientation to Starfleet, Liala was scheduled to rotate through several different divisions of the colony. Walking into the control room, the teenage Haumea native walked in wearing a sciences blue uniform without any decoration on the collar. As she walked in, she realized there were already people there. "Oh, hi, I..." she began, before stopping herself.

Oh crap. That wasn't how this was supposed to go. Clearing her throat, the girl stood a little straighter as she started over, "I mean, Crewman Caerson reporting for duty assignment, sir."

Wait, there were multiple people. How did the whole 'sir' thing work when there were multiple people. "...sirs?" she uttered, rambling as that thought played itself out. Gentlebeings? No, that sounded more like a Shakespeare thing.

Or Gunnar. Gunnar would totally say something like gentlebeings.

Delia glanced around, noting pips, or lack thereof, among the people in the room. "Relax. No sirs here yet. I guess if they're going to make us work on something together for team building, they're going to make us do the awkward waiting for superiors thing together too."

Otilie slunk into the room, still straightening her jacket with one hand and her hair with the other. She wasn't sure she was in the right place, with the right people or in fact where she was supposed to be at all. Arriving not that long ago at the colony she'd barely had time to put her bags down.

The doors opened with the customary hiss of hydraulics and an operations officer walked in. “I’m Lieutenant Buffer, glad to see you haven’t bothered to make yourselves comfortable,” Buffer said, his tone dripping with the sound of a man who knew he had reached the pinnacle of his career. This was the most powerful he was ever going to be.

“As you may or may not know, the colony has a series three replimats to service the working crew and Federation citizens. We have had nothing but complaints for the last two weeks. You will break up into teams of two and get to work.

Hope you had a fun time meeting this morning.” He turned sharply on his heel and walked out as briskly as he had entered.

Shon looked around the room and without any irony intone, “I do not believe we have all met. I am Ensign Shon of Science, my roommate Ensign Chai Ilendi and we’ve only just met Delia Cil, a pilot.” He motioned his hand to each.

“I guess that was an introduction,” Chai responded. “It’s nice to meet the rest of you, please, introduce yourselves.” Chai was certainly the bubblier of the two roommates. “Most people call me Ilendi!”

The young colonist just glanced around the room, quite uncertain how or where she fit into this assortment of officers. "Uh, Liala Caerson. Medical Technician," the teen finally managed to stammer out.

"Petty Officer Otilie Zukofsky, Security Investigations," Otilie said with a degree of confidence. Not sure if it was real or fake. "Most people call me Oz".

“Alright, I suppose we should break up and pick a replimat to start working on,” Chai said now that the introductions were over.

“Except, as you’ve failed to notice, we are an uneven number. Five people do not make three pairs,” Shon responded.

Ilendi shrugged. “I suppose as the only crewman assigned to Operations, I can work the replimat that is least used by myself,” she suggested.

“We should break up into pairs then,” Shon responded cooly. Preferring a day apart from his flat mate, he suggested, “Perhaps Laila and I should work at station one,” making the request and understanding the level of his young comrades adequacy, He assumed this a fair pairing. He might even teach her some emotional control while they worked.

“That would leave Delia and Oz to work station two. Ilendi has chosen station three as it is least used. If there are no objections, I suggest he make our final preparations and head to our assigned replimats.”

Otilie slide over to Delia with a bright smile, "Shall we?"
