Mission: Deep Freeze
Location: USS Io Wreckage, Former Medical Bay
Timeline: MD -08 : 1520 Hrs

To Luka, it was almost comical to watch the door to what was formerly the Medical Bay of the USS Io slide open, especially when there was a convenient hole in the ceiling above their heads like a makeshift skylight. But the doors had to be locked, point proven by the children they had to shoo away earlier. As they stepped inside the remains of the Bay, Luka's eyes glazed over. He hadn't seen such a sight in years. Frowning, he turned to Theo. "Lead the way."

The Security Officer lowered his rifle as he realised that the place was still locked down and no one had entered from when the last person had left. He was wearing tactical gear but he would much rather have worn something lighter. He started to search through each room of the Medical Bay. It was such a sad sight.

Grey Horse looked the room up and down. He'd never seen a Starfleet vessel in such a state of disrepair. He nudged a medical cabinet open with the end of his rifle, revealing nothing unexpected inside.

"So what can you make of it, Lieutenant?" Luka asked. He kept behind the pair of security officers, holding an emergency medical kit on the off-chance it was necessary. Thankfully, it did not look like it would be for the moment. "It doesn't look as if anyone has returned to the scene of the crime, so to speak."

"No the doors are still locked by mine and your security codes." The Chief Medical Officer said looking back at the Captain as he took in the turned over Chief Medical Officers desk and mislaid PaDDs. He thought for a moment that this would have been where Jennifer would have been and where she most likely died in the bombing. He tried not to think about the pretty redhead as he looked at the messes.

Luka held his thought, as the trio went about their inspection. Unlike the others, he had not thought it necessary to bring a weapon. Expect the unexpected, perhaps, but the worst he thought was going to be a potential collapse. It seemed the structural integrity of what was left held just fine.

His eyes rested upon the scorch marks and blast damage of what he suspected was where the explosive was left behind. "What do you guys think of the bomb? Any hint on what explosive type it was?"

The Chief of Security moved to the scorch marks and ran his hands over them and frowned. "As I assumed from when this mess started this isn't something current. It feels old fashioned." He admitted the rifle across his back now so he had both hands free.

"What do you mean?" Luka took to inspecting the remains of one of the consoles. There was little there aside from the charred out husk of the cracked screen.

"I would have to study it with science but it isn't something the Federation uses now I believe." The man said thinking of all the concoctions and recipes for explosives he had seen over the year but he hadn't seen scorch marks like that in a long time.

“I agree. It looks like an old fashioned chemical incendiary, the kind used before plasma-based explosives became commonplace.” Grey Horse concurred, noting the crumble of the remains of a tray as he prodded it with his rifle.

"Would that make it more difficult to detect?" Luka asked. "Maybe something that wouldn't have been readily identifiable?"

"It would indeed," Theo said shaking his head. A lot of thought had been put into the event to make it hard to track. "We might have a chance if we had known sooner. We might have been able to do scans for particles from the creation but this far along it is likely they would have removed most traces."

"So this isn't exactly something we can track, is it?" Luka asked, hopeful that his conclusion was wrong. "Or is it something we could potentially trace back to a source of some sort? They might have been able to make it on the ship, but the materials didn't come from just anywhere."

"If the source materials could be located they could be matched with the remnants, assuming the devices were not replicated in their entirety. I would however expect they would be relatively innocuous, and any individual attempting to cover their tracks would have had ample time to do so." Grey Horse suggested, trying not to let his pessimism impact his judgement, though he did not expect there was much that could be done.

"I'll have to scan some more to see if there is anything unusual about the ingredients that were used but this isn't just a simple lab experiment gone wrong. It is bigger than that. This person had put a lot of time and effort into the computer not recognising and alerting us." Theo wasn't feeling positive but he would investigate it more without people looking over his shoulders.

Luka was far from pleased at the lack of conclusions they could draw from the case. He crossed his arms over his chest in thought. "I shall leave you two to it. We have much to contemplate."
