Scientific Debacles

1,005 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Canary
Location: Science Facility 3
Timeline: MD 04 - 1429

There was a bustle surrounding the shuttle in the sectioned off area of the laboratory, and had been since the investigation began. Security staff were stationed just outside, while the scientists within were safe to tinker with their finding. With the Captain giving one simple directive to 'keep the findings to yourself until we know what it is that has been found,' as well as a short timeline of one week, they were on their own to discover... Well, anything!

Lillian watched in amazement as people scampered here and there and all over the shuttle, they have been given one week, one lousy week to discover what there is to discover on this mysterious shuttle. It wasn't enough time to do anything properly, let alone discover anything important without a whole bunch of people making it harder on everyone else, by interfering with each other. Sure hope that Captain Mahone knows what he's doing, and with a shake of her head, Lillian pulled out her tricorder and began programing it to ignore everyone else. Once she was done with that she began to take her own readings.

Lillian began to shift through the communications array, or what's left of it, in hopes it could shed some light
on some things about the crash. Her tricorder indicated that there were massive amounts of information here. She wasn't sure if she could retrieve the information herself, she might need an engineer for that, but she downloaded the information into her tricorder.

Nearby, the blond-haired Lieutenant Commander Bray removed herself from her own tricorder readings. All she was finding was dirt, dust, and trace minerals that only proved it had been in the cave they discovered it in. It would be a fascinating scan for a later date, but they had bigger issues.

She leaned over to look over Lillian's shoulder in curiosity, a child-like flare in her eyes. "How are you coming along?"

Startled, Lillian looked at her, "It's coming but I think I need an engineer to retrieve this information." Turning and facing the blond-haired woman, "I'm Lt. Jg Lillian James, Assistant chief of security," she said holding out her hand.

"Payton Bray." After a handshake, the scientist propped herself against the driver's seat of the shuttle. She held her hand out to Lillian. "May I see? If we can do it without an engineer, it would swiften the process."

"Sure," Lillian said. "My engineering skills are quite lacking, so if you can do it that would be very helpful."

Payton took the tricorder from Lillian, frowning at the details. "Well, luckily when you're in archaeology, you end up learning a thing or two." The woman crouched down, reaching under the sole console the shuttle had intact. "All we need to do is re-wire a few old relays to see if we can get her to start up. Hm, Lieutenant, aren't you in security?" Payton did not look from her work, expression determined. "What made you think of a double specialty?"

"My Klingon training made me want to be in security, but my ability to analyze quickly allowed me to help out in the sciences when needed," Lillian replied, glance around the shuttle she noticed that people were looking in her direction and that made her uneasy. Looking at the woman underneath the shuttle, she said, "People are starting to notice us, any chance that you can speed that up?"

"What do you mean?" Payton looked over to the gathered Starfleet officers in the already-quarantined room. She frowned, making a small gesture. In an instant, the few people scattered off to continue their work. "Lieutenant, if I thought a few spectators were going to ruin our machinations, I wouldn't have let them stay. Not to worry at all. Did you say Klingon training? That must be fascinating."

"Are all these people with you? I'm under orders to do this as quickly and quietly as possible Lt. As for my Klingon training, let's just say that my god-father is a Klingon and after my father was killed he took me under his wing." Lillian replied as she continued to watch the people scatter and go back about their work.

Payton's brow rose. Maybe she needed to get out a little more from her office. "Well, I'm in charge of the whole of the Science Department until we can get ourselves a replacement, so yes you can say they're all with me. Most of the scientists are. Don't worry about this getting done quickly and quietly. We're all under the same orders." Her arm came out of the console, and she smiled. "There we go, Lieutenant. Let's see if that worked."

Lillian looked at the tricorder, "it appears as it logs but it's not clear. We need to be able to clean this up. Are you able to clean this up or do we have to get someone else?" she asked the other woman.

By this point, Payton had herself sat upright in the shuttle, leaning against the chair and watching Lillian work. There seemed to be a disregard of rank, and while Payton might have liked to point that out to save the woman potential trouble down the line, there was little time. Not now. "How about you just get this to Viana? Other than myself, she's the one in charge of authorizing that. Hm?"

"Who is Viana?" Lillian asked, not looking up.

"One of the scientists you should be working with in regards to shuttle," Payton stated. "She has all the readings you'll need."

"Where is Viana now? Can you have her come in here?" Lillian asked finally looking up.

A tch escaped Payton's lips as she frowned at the woman. "No, Lieutenant. You can go find her just outside of the shuttle. She should be gathered with some of the civilian scientists." She didn't give much room for Lillian to respond, disappearing into the depths of the shuttle's remains with a slight huff. "I'd suggest you be quick and quiet about it!"
