Mission:
Groundwork
Location: USS Io, Security Offices
Timeline: MD 10 - 1120 Hrs
It was with a guilty expression that Luka came to the security office, holding a small dish in one hand and rubbing the back of his neck with another. While he had found himself on off duty hours, the dark-haired doctor had found another issue had cropped up while he was away. This resulted in the need to find someone who was much better at crawling through the ship to help. Since his excursion to Engineering, Luka found himself too awkward to ask Shurlok for aid, which led his request hunting to the Security Department. It was unfortunate that the only person he knew the name of was the head of the department itself.
“Lieutenant Winslow…” Luka spoke quietly, in almost a hushed murmur as he approached. “... Lieutenant, I have a slight problem.”
Theo was looking over the previous night's dispatches and when he had, had the crew go to look into alerts. There were far too many for a ship that size but he couldn’t find a pattern at all. He glanced up as someone spoke his surname quietly. “Sir, can I help?” He wondered seeing that the man had bypassed many other Officers to get to him. It never boded well to him if someone came straight to the department head.
“I have a…” Luka paused, eyes darting about to the other security crew on the off chance anyone was listening. He leaned in, voice lowering. “I have a Noodle emergency. You wouldn't happen to know where he may have run off to, do you?”
“Noo..dle?” Theodore found himself said softly trying to work out what a noodle was as it wasn’t used in the plural sense. He glanced down at the dish in the man’s hand. “You can’t be serious?” The man said realising exactly what Noodle was.
“My cat.” Luka said plainly, voice still low. “I was hoping he'd just turn up, but he's a bit larger than the normal feline. I don't know what his original owner was thinking. Probably saw the thing on a shore leave and picked him up… but I don't want him disrupting anything. So, any weird security alarms? Anything?”
Theo rolled his eyes as the man admitted it was his cat. He was pretty sure that was one of the reasons why he never had a pet, you just didn’t know what they were going to do. He stared at him for a few moments longer before he grabbed a PaDD and started going through alarms on it.
This was not the first time Luka had seen that reaction to this particular feline. His shoulders sagged as he waited for the other to complete his analysis. “I don’t think he’d do anything harmful, but he’s not really one to leave the room either. He usually… sits in one place.”
Theo sighed softly, it wasn’t the first time they had this conversation either. “Usually sure but this has happened a few times now. Maybe it is worth chipping him to track for future issues?” The man said with a small sigh as he found where the cat might have last activated an alarm.
Luka shook his head. “No, no chipping him. This is an Intrepid-class ship. We should be able to find him without any issues.” He furtively glanced to one side, noting two security officers who had decided to evesdrop. His voice lowered. “He doesn't get into anything that'll hurt him. I'm not worried about that, I just want to make sure he's out of everyone else's way “
Theo just sighed and stood up. He glanced at the pair who were eavesdropping and gave them the look that made the pair scurry away very quickly. He was known to give out tasks for people who meddle in things that didn’t belong to them. “We might be on an Intrepid Class ship but your cat liked to evade.”
“Noodle is just shy.” Luka attempted to explain, though he could hear how absurd he sounded. He didn't even like cats. “... I bet he's with one of the nurses. Or maybe the cook. The cook feeds him all the time.”
Theo wasn’t sure that Noodle the cat was shy in any shape or form but he wasn’t arguing with the things owner right now. The Security Chief just wanted to find the cat and get back to what he did, not dealing with animals. “Nurses are easier.” He muttered thinking of the pretty red head.
“Maybe we can start there. Or I can-you have work to do.” Luka gave Theo a pat on the shoulder. “I appreciate you looking into it. Before it became a problem.”
“Anytime Sir.” He said just as solemnly as anything else he had said previously to the man. He wouldn’t deny it now had a positive excuse of getting a chance to go to sickbay without being ill.
Relieved, Luka made haste to the door. “Good. Now we should move before Noodle gets any wiff of us coming.”
