One day, he would have Lugh on a leash. And that leash would be attached to a clip on his hip. And, despite the fear that Luka had of Lugh managing to walk him, it would at least allow the Captain to do his work and have his still-growing malamute pup at least wander around in a radius.
But today, the hijinks were untethered, as the dog snuck himself onto the turbolift before Luka noticed. And then, somehow, managed to get himself down to the security areas on level two. The offices, thankfully, where the malamute was greeted with pets and confused expressions. But it would not be long before Luka came running in, frantically searching for his dog.
He looked toward one of the various gold-shirted officers, who's eyes were transfixed on the door to the head of security's office. Luka's head slowly turned just in time to see Lugh trot through the open door behind another security officer. And then the door closed.
And the barking began. Luka bolted forward, frowning at the door for a moment before it slid open to reveal the scene in front of him. There was his new security chief at her desk, likely thinking this was going to be a peaceful day. At the other end was the young ensign who trotted through, PaDD to his rear-end.
And there was Lugh, triumphant as ever, holding up a torn piece of black fabric in his teeth, eyes hopeful at the Captain, who stared in absolute disbelief at the scene.
"...... I... am.... so...... very..... sorry for him...."
Veaya raised an eyebrow as she took in the scene in front of her and looked like she was desperately trying to not laugh. The Ensign in front of her looked mortified, to say the least. "Holmes I have seen many men and women in underwear over the years. Just go sort your trousers out." She instructed the bright-faced ensign before she looking at her new Commanding Officer. "Good Morning Sir." She greeted clearly confused by everything but putting on her best face.
"Good... good morning." Luka's eyes shut tight as the ensign rushed by him. He opened an eye, gaze on Lugh, who still had the shredded remains of clothing in his mouth. Kneeling down to take the cloth, he sighed. "Hope you really don't mind him, he's mostly well-behaved." He tapped the pup's nose and gave him a stern "No," which produced a sad whine from Lugh. "I would trust that the rest of the departmental adjustment is going better than Lugh's obedience classes."
"They are Th... Lieutenant Winslow left most likely the best hand over I have ever received. There are not many adjustments to be made, he had already organised a lot of it." She mused holding up the pieces of paper that had the man's writing all over. It was beautifully crafted. She was surprised by it but quickly hid it again just in case Lugh got some bright idea.
There was a twinge of guilt at the mention of the old security chief. That was a mistake he hoped would never occur again, not so long as he was in charge. "The Lieutenant was never one to leave a stone unturned," he stated, eyes on the paper. "But I never thought him one to use something so old-fashioned to relay messages. I thought the art of writing was all but obsolete in this day and age."
"He was from an old colony I am not surprised myself and he knows I would appreciate the finer things," Veaya commented on with a small fond smile. "Was there anything I could help you with other than Lugh Sir?" She teased slightly. It would take time for her to get used to the colony and work out who was who.
"Well, I mean, I hadn't seen use of paper or pencil since..." Luka narrowed his eyes at the air. "No, I don't think we truly learned how to write anything more than signing our names in Academy. Everything was on PaDD where I was raised." Having had Lugh sit in place, the Captain stood. "Actually, now that you mention it, it occurs to me we really don't know much about each other. I know this is all very candid, but... tell me a little about yourself?"
“I like order, salt and vinegar old fashioned crisps and running.” She said the first three things that came into her head. “What about about you Sir seeing we are sharing.”
Luka blinked. That was short and sweet. Painfully so. "We'll put a pin in your interests. Don't worry so much about mine. You'll see more of those when the dog breeder comes to the colony." This conversation wasn't about him, after all, but he was not going to push anyone into talking. Not if she wasn't the sharing type. Or maybe she had shared, but that was simply how she was. Short, sweet, to the point.
Luka was the opposite, at least he was when he was trying to get to know his senior staff. "So if you're a runner, explored anywhere on the Colony lately?"
“Not yet.” She admitted. She had been trying to just learn the colony and how it ran but she was always open to suggestions if the man had any. “I have been trying to learn my way around and not get lost but you have any where that is interesting to run?”
"Would you like my answer or Lugh's?" Luka asked with a chuckle. The dog yipped at his name, tongue lolling out at the Captain. "He usually takes me down whatever he thinks is a good pathway - which tends to not be the most fortunate for bipedal beings. Or shop owners... or, in this case, your security staff. If you'd like, I'm sure Lugh wouldn't mind a little company some time. We could find more agreeable routes together."
"Well send me a message when you have time Sir and I am sure we can run a route and if you need a time away from Lugh. I can happily take him on one of my runs. His adventure seeking might help be get acquainted with people." Veaya said trying to not sound as formal as she should be after everything she had heard about the colony. She was not sure if she would make friends there or not.
Lugh barked at the sound of his own name, tongue lolling out at Veaya, tail wagging. He might not have known her that much, but she sure as heck seemed to know him, or at least knew his name.
Luka, gave his dog a pat on the head. "I would not let anyone deal with him alone, not after what happened with Davna. He does not know his own strength, and I'd like to not have to replace another security chief. If you don't mind, it'd probably be good for both of us to be dragged around this big lug..."
“Well that is okay Sir.” Veaya said slowly. She was not hurt by the thought that the man thought her similar in strength to Davis but that was neither here nor there. Time would tell her strength both physically and by character. They were all unknowns to each other. “I appreciate your sentiments. I have not unpacked yet. Would be a shame as well.”
"Exactly my point. But, I'll let you settle in before I bother you about running around the colony proper." Luka stood upright, giving the woman a warm smile. "Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or issues for that matter." He opened his mouth to extend another offer, but the door opened up behind him. Lugh, in a fit of excitement, bolted out the door, causing a commotion in his wake.
Luka let out a long sigh. "I might take a day or so to respond to any concerns, but you'll have an answer. Until then..." Before Luka could finish the statement, the loud barking faded off around the corner in the offices. He gave her a sheepish wave, and retreated off after his energetic pup.
