Personal History | One of the juvenile survivors of the viral holocaust that took place on Miri's Planet which killed all the adults across the planet (ST:TOS "Miri"), Naota was survived for some 300 years prior to rescue by the intervention of Starfleet crews dispatched by order of Captain James Kirk on stardate 2713.5 (2266). Discovered in the Auckland region of New Zealand, Naota had survived a considerable amount of time by himself and required decades of rehabilitation in order to reintegrate into the planned education program. Non-communicative for much of that rehabilitation, and answering to "boy" as he didn't appear to recall his name, a clinical social worker of Japanese decent gave him the name "Naota" (meaning amber, or hard-headed) in reference to the boy's obstinance and the name stuck. Delayed behind some of the more talented Onlies due to the rehabilitation and socialization required, Naota lagged behind his peers in achieving many educational milestones. He struggled with education until he discovered a passion for aviation, which developed first as a hobby and evolved into a professional career. His major breakthrough came in the 2354 Antarian Interstellar Rally. Breaking the three-year streak of the prior champion, Naota surprised the racing world with a dark horse victory in his first major race. The outbreak of the Federation-Klingon War and the ensuing Dominion War triggered a draft of Federation citizens with useful skills, resulting in Naota being drafted into the fledgling Starfighter Corps assembled to combat the Jem'Hadar. Naota served two years as a combat pilot in the 202nd Strike Fighter Wing, seeing action at Chintoka and Cardassia Prime, before being summarily dismissed from Starfleet at the end of the war despite numerous accolades from his superiors. Embittered by the perception of being thrown away by Starfleet, Naota returned to the racing circuit and enjoyed a resurgence of popularity for the next nine years. The destruction of the Utopia Planetia Shipyards and the fleet under construction there in 2385 sent a wave of panic through the Federation that culminated in many former Dominion War veterans being recalled to active duty. Naota was one of those, assigned to a Defiant-class vessel that was hastily pushed out into service out of fear that more attacks may be coming. Despite his misgivings at being drafted a second time, Naota found a rapport with the Safeguard's captain and was granted a permanent commission as the ship's Chief Flight Controller. With Captain Weissman's endorsement, Naota was accepted into the Advanced Tactical Course, during which he undertook a compressed two-year curriculum to make up for not having entered Starfleet through the normal Academy pathway. Graduating in the top ten percent of his class, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and assigned to the USS Akira, where he served for six years leading up to the vessel's decommissioning. It was during his time on the Akira that he met a young engineer named Jericho East. Initially at odds with one another, the two reconciled their differences during an away mission in which they were stranded on a moon with a marginal atmosphere. As their friendship matured, it developed into a big brother/little brother dynamic. When the Akira's crew were reassigned, Jericho took the step of adopting Naota so that the two of them would remain together as a family. |
