Her disciplines range from xenolinguistics to biology, to the chemical sciences. She is very well-versed in multiple alien languages and customs.
Having studied the distant connections between Vulcans and Romulans, Serra is a firm proponent of reunification and the deep-seated bonds between both Vulcanoid races.

Personal History Serra is not a typical Vulcan name, nor were the circumstances of her birth. When her mother went into labour their shuttle suffered severe technical difficulties and was forced to crash-land in a remote part of the Vulcan wilderness. With limited communications, T’roth and her child would have perished, if not for a group of non-Vulcan hikers that happened to see their craft go down. One of them, a doctor named Kelly Serra, was instrumental in ensuring both mother and daughter survived. In honour of this, T’roth named her child after the one that had saved their lives.

From a young age, Serra became fascinated not only with the sciences but with alien cultures and the way they formed and developed over time. She joined the Vulcan Science Academy and from there the Vulcan Science Institute, spending twenty years learning as much as she could about the evolutionary processes of alien races and centuries-old cultures. After such a long time studying, she elected to take her leave of Vulcan to explore other opportunities to learn. Starfleet was an ideal choice of pathway, given their remit to explore and seek out new civilizations.

Serra’s career path has taken her across various starships and starbases, colonies and distant expeditions, each of them teaching her more about how the ‘new life’ that Starfleet desires to discover. Although acknowledged as a foremost mind on the subject, Serra herself is humble on this matter, always expressing her position that there is much more to be learned.

Following her most recent stint with the DTI, she has found herself in need of a position that is less intensively demanding of her time; her outlook is that she has reached a certain mid-life stage and is ready to step back from the frontline exploration positions and into something more straightforward that allows her to creatively explore her deeper calling.
