General Overview | A former engineering officer in the Romulan fleet and heir to a noble house, Aliereth has been in Federation space for almost 50 years with her husband, Tal, after the pair's departure from the Empire in protest of the growing power of the Tal Shiar. Since that time, she has become a mother to four children and has worked as a university professor and more recently as an engineer for the Bray Foundation.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Aliereth has never lost the regal bearing of her former station in life, nor the ironclad personal control imparted to her by her decades of service in the fleet. Most will find her to be elegant, gracious, and charming, a typical member of Romulan high society in her controlled, carefully focused passion…Unless they cross her or most especially threaten her children, at which point they will instead find her to be devious, ruthless, unyielding, and utterly dangerous. She has not adapted to Federation culture and society nearly as well as her husband has, and generally lets him take the lead in many public interactions, baffled or simply utterly frustrated with it all. Her behavior and humor tends to be much harder for many to parse and interpret than Tal's or Caithlin's, as she has made fewer adaptations to them than her husband or sister have, despite almost fifty years in Federation space.
Ambitions | Aliereth's fondest wish over fifty years of exile was always what she knew would never occur: A reunion with her beloved sister Caithlin. Now that such in fact has occurred (albeit as a both ecstatic and yet bittersweet occurrence, given the circumstances), her remaining desires in trying to make the most of what her life has become are to successfully raise her children and to continue to now be able to once again practice her craft as an engineer.
Hobbies & Interests | In addition to Romulan and Federation Standard, Aliereth speaks Vulcan and Tholian. She is skilled in several Romulan martial arts and with both long and short blades, and is an expert shot with a disruptor. She also enjoys hiking, hoverboarding, and building her own computers. |
Personal History | The eldest of a senator's oldest child's six children, Aliereth was groomed from infancy to someday inherit her grandmother's titles and duties, in succession to her father. She was extremely close in childhood to her next-youngest sibling, her sister Caithlin; had both remained in the Empire it was planned that when the time came, as her most trusted confidant, Caithlin would become her sister's chief of staff. She entered the Romulan military and spent the requisite years as a cadet at the Imperial War College, later undertaking her first assignment as an engineering officer aboard a warbird and serving as one of the officers authorized to maintain the ship's cloaking device; later, she and her betrothed, Tal, married and sought a five-year posting to the homeworld in order to attempt to begin their family; intending to raise their child there for several years before leaving their son or daughter in the care of their extended family per custom and returning to shipboard duty. Their time in the capital, however, served only to reinforce a growing realization among both that the Tal Shiar had gained far too much power over the last century, and even senators — even the praetor — had to fear them. Slowly, they began to realize that should they someday inherit the posts they were destined for, they would never be able to fully speak their minds and fulfill those duties as their ancestors had; and after several years of quiet deliberation, the impending birth of their first child forced a decision and they made up their minds to leave the Empire. Given they would be executed in disgrace if discovered, Aliereth disclosed their plan to only one other person--her sister Caithlin, who while she disagreed with the course of action, assisted Aliereth and Tal with covertly acquiring the funds and contacts necessary to make the arduous and dangerous journey out of the Empire at the height of its isolation, a six-month odyssey by which the pair crossed neutral zone and made their way into Federation space. The pair were eventually resettled on Earth, where their eldest daughter was born in short order. After their self-exile from the Empire, Aliereth at first, given the differences between Romulan and Federation technology (and her unwillingness to betray her people by giving away their technical secrets), worked as a university professor rather than an engineer, making use of the knowledge of galactic affairs her social rank had accorded her by teaching the subject, specializing in the Beta Quadrant. Remaining loyalty to their people and unwillingness to forsake their citizenship to the Empire also kept Aliereth and her husband from taking to final steps and becoming Federation citizens; until the destruction wrought by the Hobus incident and the information relayed by Caithlin, on her arrival a few years later, made it clear there was no longer an Empire to be loyal to...or a place for them among the powers to rise out of its fall; and Tal, Aliereth, and Caithlin officially became Federation citizens in 2393. Aliereth also finally felt free to return to her true vocation, and has been working as an engineer for the Bray Foundation for several years. More recently, family friend Gunnar Arnason, knowing Tal and Aliereth sought an environment away from the scrutiny, threats, and complications of life for those like them in either the center of the Federation or the remains of the Empire, suggested they relocate to the Haumea Colony; with both Caithlin and Aliereth employed by the Bray Foundation, the sisters took him up on this offer and the family arrived on Haumea in 2396. |
