Physical Description | As a Risian, she was not outwardly dissimilar from Terrans, though even among her people she was considered tall, strikingly slim and undeniably feminine. Her dark pupils and shoulder length black hair lended a professional presence among certain groups and she speaks with a rich, lyrical voice. She strove to wear the proper ensemble for whatever she was doing at the time, but as she was nearly always ‘on the clock’, her wardrobe chiefly consisted of finely tailored suits and occasionally flashy get ups when she was engaged with VIP constituents. And she often wore a pair of horn-rimmed glasses; not by prescription, but designed for augmented optical feedback of relevant names, faces, current events, itinerary, etc. The Federation was comprised of many bipedal humanoid races and physical appearance was not particularly seminal, but it was generally agreed that members of the Risian envoy were inviting and agreeable to the eye. As a Risian, her age progresses more slowly, making the counting of her years difficult by visual inspection alone; now at the age of 45, she still looked to be in her early 30’s. |

General Overview | She has enjoyed the comfort, familiarity and civility that comes with Federation membership. Deep in her heart and worn upon her sleeve, Briya is a pacifist and will go to (almost) any lengths to avoid physical conflict. Being nonviolent, disinterested in exploration and not particularly gifted at the hard sciences, she chose a career aligned with the Federation’s comprehensive goal of peace, but not within the ranks of Starfleet itself. She was not, strictly speaking, a diplomat when she arrived at Haumea Colony, but was by her very nature an accommodating woman. | |
Strengths & Weaknesses | + The day-to-day minutiae of scheduling, vidscreen messaging, liaising, and such. + While still on Risa she often worked as a translator among the guests and respectable agencies. Some mistook this to mean she or others of the profession were masters of languages, but truthfully she was only fluent in five languages:Risian, Federation Standard, Andorian, Vulcan, Romulan. She understood others, particularly in written form. However, her real penchant for languages came from her ability to sort through the Universal translator’s background processes to garner the basic rules and syntax of the target language. It was a timesaving method, but not cheating. This was not an advanced computer skill, just a willingness to do the tedious work of scrubbing through code and knowing what to look for. By focusing on the rules that could be applied from languages she already knew, and ignoring portions flagged by the UT as obscure or ambiguous; she was able to more quickly grasp the lexicon. + The Risian Hedony (In the Epicurean philosophy, the word hedony is defined as the absence of pain) took particular pride in identifying Valriya as a model Masseuse. This was a high honor when one considered that their entire culture regulated the implementation of pleasure - kneading and rubbing of one’s body parts was elevated to a national leisure activity. It could well be argued that such allusions were unquantifiable and subjective at best, but a comprehensive file on Briya Valriya should at least reference the claims made by others that she was a paragon of charm & emotional inveiglement; allegedly possessed of exceptional allure. Although Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets had no use for such marks in her official dossier. - She’s a ‘talker’ and sometimes what’s needed is immediate, decisive action. - Privately she values conformity as highly as peace. |

Personal History | Briya Valriya was born to Risian parents on their home world of Risa. True to the Pleasure Planet’s reputation, congenial children were nurtured into hospitable citizens. From a young age she showed herself to be a natural organizer of people and words, and found herself enamored by the stories her mother shared of her work at The Criterion, a beach resort. It sounded like her mother was having the most fun imaginable; orchestrating one huge party after the previous where everyone delighted in the unequalled time of their lives. It was not long before the girl took an active role in the resort; at first she folded towels, carried out errands and ran deliveries for staff and guests alike. She was groomed and preened by her mother and began taking on a more substantial role within the resort. As she came into her own, Briya inherited or adopted many of her mother’s mannerisms - being articulate, genteel and negotiatory. She also undertook courses in linguistics, finding the various languages the guests spoke to be almost as fascinating as the guests themselves. And she was good at it. She discovered that knowledge of the language helped with understanding the individual and making the effort to speak their native tongue helped build rapport with difficult guests. When her mother retired early, Briya officially took over the running of the resort as Hospitality Director. In many ways she’d already been handling much of the work, often called on to mediate arguments between guests or staff and vendors. As she grew into the title, she embraced both her natural and learned talents. She became versed in public relations, communications, Applied Linguistics and Organizational Psychology. There were a few accredited degrees involved, but she did it for the joy of learning and becoming better at her job. She came to appreciate the complexities of getting that many people to work together at their level best. Over the years, she was offered numerous jobs both on and off world, but had always been happy with the resort. When finally she was offered The Gala de Nuit - a five star hotel & convention center in Paris - she was faced with a decision to leave Risa. General Manager to a state of the art establishment being erected so near the Federation Council Building - it was too tempting to pass up. She had been off world before, but relocating ninety light years to the Sol System was a huge step. In the end she accepted the job, but not before her government bestowed upon her, rather against her will, the title of Cultural Attaché. She was not the sole possessor of such a title, and it was - technically - a military position. One should note; the Risian people maintained no military vessels nor patrolled their space. There was no standing army on Risa nor were weapons allowed on the planet’s surface. It was a ceremonial position and required nothing of her; mandated no additional duties than those she was already performing. For six years Briya Valriya managed the Gala de Nuit. She met everyone who was anyone who represented the masses or the concealed. She formed relationships and friendships; found colleagues and advocates. One such colleague was Emelyse Amaerie, a fellow Risian, who would soon go on to become Briya’s employer. Emelyse had just ran, unsuccessfully, for a seat on the Federation Council and was already preparing for her next campaign. She solicited Briya’s assistance then implored her to manage the campaign and although Briya had no experience with politics specifically, Emelyse Amaerie secured her spot on the Council. Happy with the rapport between them, Briya was brought on as the aide to Councilwoman Amaerie, and with her time now devoted entirely to the world of politics, Briya stepped down as general manager of the hotel. After eight years of serving in this capacity, Amaerie and Valriya agreed that Valriya was on a consistent path to follow in Amaerie’s footsteps and continue the agenda they’d worked towards. But the transition from hotelier to Aide directly to Councilwoman was highly irregular and her lack of diplomatic experience would be used as ammunition against her in the running. Amaerie used some influence to have Briya Valriya appointed to the Federation Diplomatic Corp (FDC), a division of the Federation Department of the Exterior responsible for diplomacy within the Federation, maintaining inter-state relations, and negotiating treaties with foreign states. Now in her second year with the FDC, Briya has the rank of Consul and has been dispatched to the Haumea Colony. She is not happy with this assignment, but has committed herself to carrying out her responsibilities. |
